Safety First!

Always use training nunchaku (foam or padded) when learning new techniques. Practice in a clear, open space away from breakable objects. Wear protective gear and start slowly to build control.

Beginner Techniques

Master these fundamental moves before advancing to more complex techniques.

01

Proper Grip

Learn how to hold the nunchaku correctly. The thumb should be positioned along the shaft, not wrapped around it, for better control and safety.

Steps:

  1. Hold one shaft firmly in your dominant hand
  2. Position thumb along the length of the shaft
  3. Keep a firm but relaxed grip
02

Basic Swing

The foundation of all nunchaku movements. Practice swinging one shaft in a controlled pendulum motion from side to side.

Steps:

  1. Start with nunchaku hanging at your side
  2. Swing forward in a straight line
  3. Catch the swinging shaft with your other hand
03

Figure Eight

The classic nunchaku pattern that forms the basis for more advanced techniques. Creates an "8" shaped motion in front of your body.

Steps:

  1. Start with a basic swing to one side
  2. Guide the swinging shaft across your body
  3. Complete the "8" pattern with fluid motion
04

Hand Transfer

Learn to smoothly transfer the nunchaku from one hand to the other, a fundamental skill for flow and control.

Steps:

  1. Swing the nunchaku across your body
  2. Release at the peak of the swing
  3. Catch with the opposite hand

Intermediate Techniques

Once you've mastered the basics, progress to these more challenging techniques.

Overhead Rotations

Continuous circular motions above your head. Develops timing and spatial awareness.

Intermediate

Behind-the-Back Transfers

Transfer the nunchaku from front to back and vice versa. Enhances coordination and fluidity.

Intermediate

Continuous Figure Eights

Seamless, uninterrupted figure eight patterns with alternating hand positions.

Intermediate

Under-leg Passes

Pass the nunchaku under your leg during rotations. Adds complexity to your flow.
